Sir Steve Redgrave visits Hempsted!
On Tuesday 16th July 2013, we were privileged to be visited by five times Olympic Champion, Sir Steve Redgrave. Hempsted is very well respected for its commitment to quality physical education and sport. Sir Steve visited us as part of a nationwide promotion of the Matalan Sporting Promise, a scheme designed to improve the quality of PE across both primary and secondary schools.
The day started with media interviews, followed by an assembly to the whole school. Sir Steve shared with the children his passion for sport, the demands of training and what it felt like to be an Olympic Champion.
He also watched the children take part in a number of physical activities before joining in himself. What an experience for all!
The day ended with another assembly. Each year, Hempsted awards a wide variety of trophies to the Year 6 children; these range from sporting endeavour to reading. Trophies are also awarded for altruism and for caring. All the awards reflect the values of our school. Amazingly, Sir Steve was able to stay with us and award the trophies to the children. This provided fantastic photo opportunities for parents and we are sure, will be a day that will live long in the memories of all involved. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen, and a huge thank you to Sir Steve Redgrave, who took the time to make everyone feel special!
